ICANN Registerfly Fact Sheet
Can be downloaded here
An ownership dispute, coupled with a history of poor service, at RegisterFly (a registrar), has meant that its customers have had tremendous difficulty managing their domain names.
The company’s activities have affected many of its estimated 100,000 (or more) customers and among other things resulted in the reported loss of hundreds, possibly thousands, of domains.
The organisation charged with ensuring the stability and security of the domain name system, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), attempted to get the registrar to address the problems.
After many months of discussion with RegisterFly and following the processes under the Registrar Accreditation Agreement, ICANN announced it was terminating the registrar’s accreditation.
The situation has highlighted several issues within the registrar system, and ICANN’s president has called on the community to reform the Registrar Accreditation Agreement and wider registrar policy.
Termination of RegisterFly.com Registrar
ICANN today issued a formal notice of termination of RegisterFly.com’s Registration Accreditation Agreement (RAA).
ICANN has issued a letter to RegisterFly [PDF, 902K] indicating that it will cease operating as an ICANN-Accredited Registrar on March 31, 2007. Under the terms of the Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA), ICANN must provide 15 days written notice to RegisterFly of its intention to terminate.
Effective immediately ICANN has terminated RegisterFly’s right to use the ICANN Accredited Registrar logo on its website.
Between now and 31 March RegisterFly is required to unlock and provide all necessary Authinfo codes to allow domain name transfers to occur. Any and all registrants wishing to transfer away from RegisterFly during this period should be allowed to do so efficiently and expeditiously.
“Terminating accreditation is the strongest measure ICANN is able to take against RegisterFly under its powers,” Dr. Paul Twomey, President and CEO of ICANN said today.
“ICANN has been frustrated and distressed by recent management confusion inside RegisterFly,” Dr. Twomey, President said. “I completely understand the greater frustration and enormous difficulty that this has created for registrants.”
When the Agreement is terminated, ICANN can approve a bulk transfer of all current RegisterFly domain names to another ICANN accredited Registrar.
“Of course, RegisterFly does not have to wait till then. They can request ICANN to approve a bulk transfer immediately. I call on RegisterFly to act in the interests of registrants and seek such a transfer from us straight away,” Dr. Twomey said.
ICANN intends to hold a forum to discuss the reform of the Accreditation policy and process at its Lisbon meeting in a week’s time*.
A set of questions and points to inform the discussion will be made public prior to the Lisbon meeting.
Domains Tranfered, Blog Updated
I’ve just finished my most valuable domains transfer from RegisterFly.com to Enom.com.
Also, upgraded blog version to latest one (2.1.2).
RegisterFly.com Update
The United States District Court in New Jersey today awarded Kevin Medina control of RegisterFly.com Inc. The decision resolves a dispute over ownership of the company.
The resolution of this issues does not alter RegisterFly obligations to immediately cure the breaches of the Registrar Accreditation Agreement, as noticed by ICANN.
ICANN has been advised and has confirmed that RegisterFly is aware of the issues raised by many registrants, regarding their inability to transfer their registrations away from RegisterFly to another Registrar.
ICANN has demanded that RegisterFly immediately act to provide authorization codes and has also demanded a meeting with RegisterFly (and other relevant parties that are assisting ICANN) to resolve RegisterFly’s reported failures. We will provide an update on the outcome of this meeting.
RegisterFly Update
ICANN provides the following update:
PIR notified ICANN that the .ORG registry has restored the domains that were in RGP and placed those domains on Server Deleted Prohibited status. [PIR Letter to ICANN, PDF, 13K]
On March 5, 2007, RegisterFly provided a copy of domain name registration data in response to ICANN’s request pursuant to RAA section 3.4.3. ICANN is analyzing the data for integrity and completeness. ICANN will respond to RegisterFly with questions regarding aspects of the material provided. This material represents a portion of the material requested in ICANN’s letter of February 21, 2007 [PDF, 104K].
